Hi, Is this project still allive?

I hope it is as it may solve a problem for me but I will need to reword the message sent in the emails, can this be done as I cannot find where the text is stored.

I would also like to know what the price is for removing the copyright information as well please.

I all,
I have a problem on my Windows Vista that began afetr the purchase of an external Hard Disk Freecom.
A few days afetr the purchase I disconnected it while it was writing and, since that moment, every time I connect and disconnect it, the PC go to freeze mode for 5 minutes.
The same thing happen even if the hard disk is disconnected: every time I start windows it go to freeze a little after the password, and every time I connect and disconnect a usb device.
I have looked for the solution everywhere, updated windows, unistalled and installed the hard disk from the device manager but I solved the problem only when I restored a recent backup.
Yesterday the Hard disk was writing a backup while Vista was installing the updates; at the end of the proceure windows restarted automatically and the problem began again!!!
The Pc go to freeze when it starts, every time I connect or disconnect the hard disk, an usb earphone that has always worked switch on but there is no audio and I don't know how many others usb devices will have problems.
Has anyone an idea to solve this problem before I throw out of the window Vista or the the hard disk?

You probably have this issue because you use an URL with a local IP address, which is not recommended especially since Outlook flags all emails with URLs targeting IP Addresses as fishing emails and deactivates the links.

We recommend you use a publicly accessible FQDN recorded in a DNS to access your Velodoc XP server even locally.

I'm evaluating Velodoc XP

It works fine, but I need to know if it' possible to change some information on the e-mail such as the URL of my server, because the server is behind a firewall and not directly on the internet so the URL that is in the mail is not reachable for external users.

Hello, I have a webpage that contains the Upload control (with progress bar). When I access this page, all is OK - I am able to upload and download documents, however when I move off the page I get the error :-

System.Web.HttpException: The upload identifier cannot be null or empty. You need to add a parameter named "muid" to the query string of your request.

To move off the page I am using a Server.Transfer to get to another page so I cannot really use a (muid) querystring variable. Further, I can't see that there should be a need for a muid querystring variable when I move off the page as it is no longer relevant.

Can anyone help

After installing on an x64 computer, .dat files are not processed and Http 404 errors are returned.
To make it work, open IIS manager, display VeloDoc virtual directory properties.
Open the application configuration page (Configuration... button), find .dat files in the list and click Change.
Add "64" at the end of the "Framework" directory name, eg : C:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework64\
Note that all other file types refer to this folder.
The reason is .NET Framework 32 bits is not allowed as a web extension on a 64 bit system.
Maybe the installer should be improved.
Anyway, this program is really a great job.

The ASP.NET Ajax server controls in Velodoc XP Edition rely on ASP.NET Ajax Extensions 1.0 which you can download at http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=ca9d90fa-e8c9-42e3-aa19-08e2c027f5d6&displaylang=en.

They can be used with .NET 3.5 and VS 2008, but:

ASP.NET Ajax Extensions 1.0 have to be installed;
web.config needs to be configured to use ASP.NET Ajax Extensions 1.0.

The demand for .NET 2.0 and VS 2005 is still very high and we plan to upgrade the ASP.NET server controls in velodoc XP Edition to use ASP.NET Ajax Extensions 3.5 or above in a future version.

Some users have reported the following errors during setup:

Cannot add permissions to c:\storage
Some or all identity references could not be translated

Velodoc XP Edition runs under the identity of:

MACHINENAME\ASPNET on Windows XP,
MACHINENAME\NETWORK SERVICE on Windows Server 2003, Vista and Windows Server 2008, standalone server,
DOMAINNAME\NETWORK SERVICE on Windows Server 2003, Vista and Windows Server 2008, domain controller.

The [MACHINENAME|DOMAINNAME]\NETWORK SERVICE account is part of the [MACHINENAME|DOMAINNAME]\IIS_WPG user group on Windows Server 2003. It is part of the BUILTIN\IIS_IUSRS user group on Vista and Windows Server 2008. Accordingly:

On Windows XP, the setup gives permission to access C:\STORAGE to MACHINENAME\ASPNET;
On Windows Server 2003, the setup gives permission to access C:\STORAGE to [MACHINENAME|DOMAINNAME]\IIS_WPG depending whether the target machine is a domain controller;
On Vista and Windows Server 2008, the setup gives permission to access C:\STORAGE to BUILTIN\IIS_IUSRS.

The error above occurs when the setup routines cannot find the relevant windows account in accordance with the target environment.

Whether it is part of a Workgroup or a Domain,
If you are using a server version, whether it is a standalone server or a domain controller.

IIS and ASP.NET include several settings which you may have to configure in order to upload/post large files.

First let's cover what the Velodoc XP Edition setup does for you:

On IIS5 and IIS6, in the httpRuntime section of the application web.config file, the setup sets a large value for executionTimeout and maxRequestLength. To understand and modify these settings please refer to http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/e1f13641.aspx.
On IIS7, in the requestLimits section of the application web.config file, the setup sets a large value maxAllowedContentLength. To understand and modify these settings please refer to http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms689460.aspx.
Note that if you are implementing sessionState, you need to plan for a large timeout.

Second, let's cover what the Velodoc XP Edition setup is not doing for you, essentially because it affects all applications running on IIS and we like to play in our own back yard:

In the IIS metabase, you may have to consider increasing the values of MaxRequestEntityAllowed, AspMaxRequestEntityAllowed and UploadReadAheadSize. Although these properties essentially relate to ASP applications, they apparently also affect ASP.NET applications as explained here.
In the processModel section of machine.config, you may have to consider increasing the values of responseDeadlockInterval and responseRestartDeadlockInterval. To understand and modify these settings, please refer to http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/7w2sway1(VS.71).aspx.

In order to diagnose specific issues, you need to look at the logs, especially the event log, the IIS log and the Http Error logs as described in http://support.microsoft.com/?id=820729.

Velodoc XP Edition is a web application which integrates with an SMTP Server to send email notifications corresponding to messages sent by a user, the issuer of the message, to a recipient. Each message has links to download large files uploaded onto the Velodoc XP Server. There are basically 3 possible configurations:

Using an unattended system mailbox like noreply@website.com, as the FROM of the email;
Using the issuer of the message, a user mail address, as the FROM of the email;
Using the issuer of the message as the FROM of the email and the system mailbox as the SENDER of the email, so that the email is sent by the system mailbox on behalf of the user.

First, Delivery Status Notifications (DSNs) are returned to the SENDER of the email, and if there is no SENDER specified, to the FROM address of the email. Trying to set the "Return-Path" header in the email won't change anything because "Return-Path" is always overwritten by the SMTP server.

Second, most recent mail servers perform several checks before accepting incoming emails, otherwise they reject them as spam:

First they query the DNS to check the PTR record associated with the IP address which has sent the email. Some servers will just require that the designated domain exist , others might require that the designated domain matches the domain name in the FROM field and/or in the SENDER field;
Then they might also query SPF records and DKIM records if they exist for the domain name of the FROM and SENDER addresses.

So you are left with a choice which is:

either having your users receive DSNs and having most of the emails sent by Velodoc XP Edition being caught by spam filters because your SMTP server is not authorised to send on behalf of users;
or escaping spam filters but not receiving DSNs.

The second is obviouly the preferred option and all email notifications sent by Velodoc XP Edition should be sent by an unattended system mail address like noreply@website.com where DNS records (essentially PTR and SPF) exist to show that website.com is authorised to send from the IP address of the SMTP server used to send mails with the tradeoff that all delivery status notifications will return to noreply@website.com.

To improve this situation, we have implemented two features:

You can now configure in web.config an application setting named "GetReadReceipt" which is set to true by default and which invites recipients to return a read receipt of email notifications.
All email notifications are sent with a "X-Forward-DSN-To" header containing the email address of the issuer of the message, and depending on your mail server you can either configure a rule which forwards each DSN to the issuer of the message, or install the SMTP transport event sink which is part of the project and which does that for you on Microsoft SMTP servers.

This is an issue which is related to User Access Control in Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 and which all software setup built with Visual Studio 2005 encounter even with VS2005 SP1 and the Update for Vista. To be able to uninstall, we need to run the uninstall script as administrator which requires a specific procedure. To do that:

I run the uninstall once from Control Panel -> Features and Programs with Process Monitor running and capturing events.
Note that ProcMon.exe is just an exe to copy on the target machine. There is no setup and to uninstall simply delete the file.
I configure Process Monitor to only show file system activity (disable registry activity and process and thread activity).
I also setup a filter to exclude all process names which are not msiexec.exe and to include all paths which begin with C:\Windows\Installer.
This first step shows me that uninstalling actually launches msiexec.exe with an MSI file called something like C:\Windows\Installer\630928.msi
I then open a command window as administrator,
change directory to C:\Windows\Installer, and
run msiexec -x 630928.msi to uninstall.

New Post: Launching Velodoc XP returns Http Error 404

After installing Velodoc XP Edition and launching the desktop shortcut, the browser may return Http Error 404 - Page Not Found under certain circumstances. In particular this occurs if .NET framework 3.0 has been installed prior to installing IIS on Windows. In this case:

the ASP.NET Web Service Extension is not authorized or may not even exist;
the script map linking .aspx files to aspnet_isapi.dll is not recorded

To configure IIS to execute ASP.NET applications you may have to run
%WINDIR%\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727\aspnet_regiis.exe -i -enable

Even after registering ASP.NET with IIS, the application may still not execute.
In this case, delete and recreate the VelodocXP web application (with read and script authorizations) or reinstall.

Many users seem to struggle configuring mailSettings in web.config to authenticate with SMTP servers, especially MS Exchange.

First, I recommend reading http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms164242.aspx or any documentation regarding the System.Net.Mail classes which are used to send email notifications.

We have provided the SMTP Test Utility to make it easier for you to test your SMTP connection. You can also consider using an SMTP proxy to visualize the commands sent by Velodoc XP Edition or the SMTP Test Utility to your mail server via System.Net.Mail.

You basically have 3 authentication scenarios: Basic Autentication, TLS and Windows Integrated Authentication.
The mailSettings/smtp/network element in web.config misses an enableSsl attribute to configure TLS but we have implemented a workaround.

Now configuring web.config in Velodoc XP Edition gives you two options:

<network host="localhost" port="25" defaultCredentials="true"/>

<network host="localhost" port="25" userName="xxx" password="yyy"/>

to use defaultCredentials = true or Windows Integrated Authentication, you need to configure the Velodoc XP web application in IIS to run as a dedicated application pool under the identity of an NT user corresponding to the mailbox that sends the email notifications. We have a document which explains this in details with screenshots for Exchange 2007 and which you can request by posting a comment here. Note that this is the Microsoft "preferred" way but your SMTP server should support Windows Integrated Authentication.
using userName and password requires that your mail server supports basic authentication or TLS (using the workaround described above). Note that some SMTP servers require an email adress as the user name (username@domain.tld), other SMTP servers just require the user name portion of the email address (username) and Exchange or IIS SMTP server require an NT user name (domain\username).

This reveals that the error occurs when MSI calls the installer class in Memba.Install.XP.dll.

On some (not all) Windows Server 2003 configurations the setup fails with the following error:

This error is being researched and we will post more information soon.
